Buzz Watch: Tokio Hotel, Europe’s Latest Teen Music Craze, Comes to America

Authored by Jay Baage on December 3, 2007 - 9:21am.

I know we should probably not look to the German music market as indicative of world taste, after all they love David Hasselhoff's odd baritone, but Universal Germany's teen band Tokio Hotel is an interesting phenomenon. They have sold nearly 3 million CDs and DVDs in their homeland in a time when kids get most of their music from the Internet. With four number one singles and two number one albums (the band members were between 13 and 15 years old when recorded their first album) they've become the biggest act to come out of Germany in 20 years.

Like Disney phenomenon Miley Cyrus, AKA Hannah Montana, these teen idols sell out venues everywhere they go. When they toured Germany, the band sold out 43 venues with more than 400,000 fans, which translates into the most successful debut tour ever in Germany. But this is not sweet high school musical stuff. It‘s rock.

The band formed in Magdeburg, Germany, in 2001 as "Devilish" and consists of Bill Kaulitz, 18 (vocals), Bill's twin brother Tom Kaulitz, 18 (guitar), Gustav Schäfer, 19, (drums) and Georg Listing, 20 (bass). After changing their name to Tokio Hotel and successfully touring other German-speaking countries such as Austria and Switzerland as well as France and Israel, Interscope Records (the band's U. S. label) now thinks that the band is ready for the American market.

Their first U.S. album is a combination of hits from their two German albums-"Schrei (Scream)," and "Zimmer 483 (Room 483)," - translated into English and re-recorded.

"It's always been a dream of ours to make it in the States," says vocalist Bill Kaulitz, who sings in English for the first time on Scream, the band's U.S. debut, in a statement. "We grew up listening to American bands like Metallica, Green Day and The Red Hot Chili Peppers. We wanted to get a chance to do what they do."

With the Internet and teen social networks, news about international phenomena like Tokio hotel travels fast. However, it remains to be seen whether U. S. girls will scream as high as German girls when Tokio Hotel lands in the U. S.

The band just seem very German to me and I have a hard time seeing American parents taking their kids to see a band that used to be called Devilish, even though every song has a positive message, so it will be very interesting to see how this one plays out.

Tokio Hotel

I think you'd be surprised at how many American fans they already have. They are incredible. Truly. Bill Kaulitz is unbelievable.

Agreed. Natural born

Agreed. Natural born Star. And yes, they have many fans in the US, including me.

yup, they will be huge...

... because they sound exactly like everyone else. they sound custom-made for american radio to me... ie. derivative and unoriginal. so yes, bring on the german fallout boy. awesome.

Unoriginal?!! No way.

The last thing this band is, is unoriginal. They are great musicians, and their lyrics comes from their heart. They have a sound of their own. Tokio Hotel is a happier band than many think. It´s their fans that are depressed. Which is only natural seeing as they are teenagers. Tokio Hotel has said that they try to give their fans hope through their lyrics. This article was well- informed. I was happy to read it. visit this page and listen: www.tokiohotel.com

Unoriginal

Tokio Hotel are not exactly original but they do have something about them that is unlike everyone else. I severely doubt they are anything like Fallout Boy because honestly Tokio Hotel are better musicians then Fallout Boy. As to them not doing well I think they well have a huge effect on the country because America is a very open and excepting place and I think will be pleased to get something new other than all these depressing little emotional 30 year olds and as I am a Tokio Hotel fan and know other American Tokio Hotel fans they will have an amazing response.

They may sound like others,

They may sound like others, but I am sure that they are not custom-made for the american radio! Check the wikipedia at least, and you'll see that the states is only another place to go (although a big market sure), they've already been to many countries in recent years. All the European fans would laugh very hard hearing that. In fact, some are worried that their look may prevent american's from giving them a chance. And no, I am not american, and I listen to music from different countries. It's called globalisation and it means that everybody gets influenced by many places and not only the place where he/she was born. And I'd rather hear them that many others on the charts, thank you very much! Check them, although I prefer the German versions

Worried about Devilish?

I'm a parent, and my 8 year old son adores Tokio Hotel as much as I do. So much that he's actually learned a number of the songs in German. I have no problem whatsoever with him going with me to one of their concerts. It would take a very uneducated (or frighteningly overprotective) parent to be concerned about the fact that the band was named Devilish when the boys were pre-teens. Any parent who has raised a pre-teen boy knows that's tame compared to some of the things they come up with.

Tokio Hotel actually has

Tokio Hotel actually has thousand of fans here in America. We are preparing for them to come and take over the states! Us girls are all but screaming for them to come here. don't believe me check out www.tokiohoteltakesamerica.com or www.tokiohotelfans.com. TH_fan_4_life TOKIO HOTEL ROXS MY SOXS OFF!

i think it rather ridiculous

i think it rather ridiculous that you wrote parents wouldn't let their kids see them in concert because of a name they used to have.... their name isn't what really matters, its how they sound. i know for a fact that my parents wouldn't stop me from liking them because they are truly an amazing band in my opinion better than fall out boy. Their lyrics are amazing and is part of the reason why we like them so much.

TOKIO HOTEL..UK

hey all TH fans out there..its soo amazing how tokio hotels fanbase is rising...and i just love watchin it grow ..its brilliant!...i just really hope that you us guys support the uk and help bring them over here...PLEASE..BITTE... WE LOVE TOKIO HOTEL TOO..BUT THEY NEED 2 COME TO ENGLAND SO WE CAN SHOW THEM.. KEEP SPREADIN THE LOVE PPL..... come to england!!!.....=]

when is tokio hotel comeing

when is tokio hotel comeing to america?!?!

surprise urself

im a dude from Mexico (central America), and even in this country with Spanish language speakers, Tokio Hotel has fans! , incredible isn´t? but true, there´s a lot of blogs and flogs (of girls most of them) that has references and pics of this boys (Tokio Hotel), amazing i know, but with this you'll realize how far this group had come, a real and successful phenomenon i think

like FOB? please.

I think that it's about time that Tokio Hotel prepares to hit America. We could all use a new culture shock around here besides the Brits. Maybe they'll inspire more teens to learn a new language or something. And the whole Devilish thing is ridiculous. No parent in their right mind would prevent their child from listening to them just because of that. As for Bill's look, I find that he's more highly thought of among bisexuals, such as myself, because of his androgynous appearance. That's the thing they should be worrying about, since many people I know are turned off of Tokio Hotel completely just because of Bill. Maybe they should tune it down if they want more fans, but I think they're perfect the way they are, and am so excited for the US tour!

I'd like the read statements

I'd like the read statements of other websites!I am interesting in,what they are thinking about Tokio Hotel. Firstly I read a sentence like" Why is the name of a german band Tokio Hotel and is the lead singer a boy or a girl?" Well, the autor know now that Bill is a boy, just because Bill Kaulitz! Okay...I hope that Tokio HOtel will have many fans in the U.S.! I heard from the americain website that there are many fans already!:-D Tokio Hotel are not only interesting because of their own style! No, their music is great! Okay, everyone knows that the english version of the songs can not be better than the german songs! It's rock music! In english it sounds a little bit more as pop than rock, but real fans will know the german and english versions! Tokio Hotels European tour this year was amazing! The next tour is coming! Bill tried his best in singing english,so we will hear your german singing! hopfully! Very soon! Greeting from a german TH fan and sorry for my mistakes!

OMG

I love Tokio Hotel, I cant wait till they come to America, not many americans know who they are but let them play once, let them get on the radios and they will get big fast.

I'm sorry. Someone said they

I'm sorry. Someone said they were unoriginal and sounded like everyone else. I don't share that opinion. Compared to all the bands I hear on Kerrang! they sound very different. That's why I was attracted to listening to them. It's nice to see there are a few German fans on here. :)

I think TH needs to come to

I think TH needs to come to Texas particular the dallas area if possible. Then I don't have to drive/take a plane to some city...plus TH I know has a lot of US fans.If there was just more ads and magazines on them then they would be more well-known, but with myspace and youtube it's no surprise if people think you don't know of them. It's more independent since they are just getting out there so to speak in the US! Btw i got the TH 2-song single!!!!!!!!!!!hahahaahahahahahahaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa take that:P It was well worth the 1.99 plus tax.Kinda hard to find since it was not marked properly and wasn't in the new release section, but never fear people you can always get it online at like target. best of luck to any American trying to get a hold of it:)

Parental response and Youth response

Why would it matter if they were called Devilish that's not there name they became famous with and I know my parents would be fine with me seeing them as long as there name wasn't *Depression Makes Me Hurt Myself* or something like that. Tokio Hotel is a very positive band there song's are beautiful and in my opinion they'd have a huge response with girls screaming because teenage girls love nothing more than screaming for a band they like. I think they would get the parental approval because all their music is appropriate I mean none of there music is depressing, has swearing and says to hurt yourself or anything.

Okay i am From America and I

Okay i am From America and I Love Tokio Hotel!!! but i just had to comment on what someone said on here "America is a very open and excepting place" LOL!!! ugh that made me laugh so hard
