Los Angeles
- News Corp.'s (NYSE: NWS) Fox Entertainment Group announced on Tuesday that it has
acquired Beliefnet, an online religion and spirituality community site.
Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Launched in 1999, Beliefnet offers
social networking tools, articles, sacred text searches, interviews and
discussion areas; the company has existing partnerships with TIME magazine and
Yahoo. Contributors have included Elliott Abrams, Sam Harris and Andrew
Sullivan.
Beliefnet will become part of Fox Digital Media, which supports Fox's
cable, TV and film brands online.
Fox said Beliefnet will also become a
distributor of content from News Corp.'s faith-based businesses, including HarperCollins'
Zondervan and HarperOne brands, and 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment's
faith-based programming initiative.
Beliefnet will additionally partner closely
with Fox Interactive Media, and implement its targeted advertising platform.
"Beliefnet
has garnered respect for its commitment to quality, editorial strength and
unbiased approach to faith and spirituality from a broad range of consumers,
religious and political leaders, journalists and advertisers," said Dan
Fawcett, president of Fox Digital Media.
"FEG's goal is to leverage these
characteristics across a broader media canvas."
