German Court Ends Injunction; T-Mobile Can Sell Locked iPhone

Frankfurt, Germany - A German court reversed an earlier injunction on Tuesday, and said mobile operator T-Mobile may sell Apple's (NASD: AAPL) iPhone with a condition locking customers to its own wireless service for a two-year term, the Associated Press reported.

A court in Hamburg had earlier sided with T-Mobile rival Vodafone, who had argued that the exclusivity deal with Apple was unfair, and issued an injunction on the locked iPhone.

Apple and T-Mobile complied, and began selling an unlocked version of the iPhone in Germany -- at more than twice the cost of the "locked" version.

The AP reports that T-Mobile will cease sales of the unlocked iPhone, but will unlock the devices after their two-year contract with consumers expires, at no additional charge.

Laws in France also compelled Apple iPhone partner Orange to sell an unlocked version in the country, which costs about $950.

Orange has said that it sold almost 30,000 iPhones in France in the five days following its launch there on Nov. 29, and that some 20% of these were unlocked.
