San Francisco - Red Room Omnimedia Corp. has raised $1.25 million from angel investors including Craigslist founder Craig Newmark and Chronicle Books CEO Nion McEvoy, and launched a private beta test of its new social network for authors, Red Herring reported.

The San Francisco-based company says the site will feature "all the world's greatest writers in one room -- from Pulitzer Prize-winning authors to the editors of groundbreaking underground literary journals."

Initial participants will include Maya Angelou, Amy Tan, Alice Walker, James Patterson, Salman Rushdie and Norman Mailer, who approved the partnership before his death, according to Red Herring.
