Reston, Va. - "Green Monday," a term recently coined by eBay to describe the second Monday in December as the heaviest online spending day of the season, lived up to its billing, according to new figures from market research firm comScore.

The firm said that U.S. online retail spending on Dec. 10 reached $881 million, setting a record as the heaviest online spending day in history.

The figure was 33% higher than the same day in 2006.

"Online spending is following the pattern it first established last year, namely an accelerating growth rate as the season progresses," said Gian Fulgoni, the chairmain of comScore.

"Consumers are clearly responding positively to the enticing promotions and discounts being offered by retailers this year."

comScore said that spending is currently on track to meet its forecast of $29.5 billion this holiday season.
