Email Marketing Manager - Nike

Authored by dmw on December 28, 2007 - 6:17am.

Mind readers wanted.

Consumers today are more sophisticated and better educated than in any previous generation. They decide what they want and when they want it. At Nike, our challenge is to anticipate what they'll want and be ready with a solution. When we're really good, it's something -- a product, a service, a whatever -- that's so intuitively perfect the consumer hasn't even imagined it could exist. Your job? To make sure we know our consumers better than we know ourselves.

But you knew that already, didn't you?

As our Email Marketing Manager, you’ll lead the email marketing efforts for the US Digital Commerce business (NikeStore.com & NikeiD.com). You’ll be primarily responsible for campaign planning and management, driving email strategy, sharing results, vendor management, forecasting and expense tracking. You’ll develop and manage all seasonal email marketing efforts, forecasting resource requirements, managing relationships, calendars, content plans and communicating timelines. You’ll also act as a liaison between agencies, vendors and Nike stakeholders, scheduling appropriate meetings and routing deliverables for approval by stakeholders. You’ll participate in asset trafficking and campaign QA. You’ll drive Nike’s email marketing strategy, focusing on segmentation, cadence, quality and sequencing of all commerce, brand and retail communications; leverage analytics to develop, manage and optimize a segmentation model; and lead email address acquisition efforts, partnering with site producers and US Retail on collection initiatives. You’ll develop testing and optimization plans for targeting, content, creative and landing pages and partner with the Marketing Program Manager to develop email promotional plans. You’ll actively benchmark competitors and best of breed email marketers and act as Nike’s email marketing expert and the go-to person for all email marketing related questions. You’ll also ensure core stakeholders are vested in the success of email marketing campaigns and champion best practices on a weekly, monthly, quarterly and ad hoc basis to the extended Digital Commerce teams, Brand Marketing, US Retail and Global teams. You’ll partner closely with the Marketing Analytics team on reporting and deep-dive requirements. This opportunity also involves ensuring that financial planning is done for each season’s email marketing activities to maximize spend and to meet key performance metrics and partnering with the Direct Marketing Manager on monthly forecast reporting of revenue and expenses and reconciliation as necessary. In addition, you’ll execute against budget and ensure accurate expenditure tracking and accounting against plans

Requirements for the position include:

  • Bachelor's degree in Business, Marketing, Communications or a related field
  • 5 years’ e-commerce experience with demonstrated knowledge of online marketing tactics, contact strategy development, campaign optimization and circulation planning
  • Hands-on experience managing email campaigns and delivery through one of the major email service providers, either in client or agency role
  • Ability to articulate and champion email marketing best practices and standards
  • Exceptional project management skills and attention to detail
  • Passion for data and metrics
  • General understanding of enterprise level reporting tools and basic knowledge of HTML
  • Strong understanding of direct-to-consumer business, competitive/business environment and consumer behavior
  • Strong verbal and written communications skills, including meeting facilitation and presentations
  • Ability to work independently and cooperatively in a diverse group
  • Ability to effectively network and leverage internal and external resources

Benefits. You probably already know we have a pretty generous benefits package, but here's the highlight reel: a stock purchase plan, matching 401(k) retirement plan, on-site sports complex, childcare and full health insurance. There's not room here to mention every benefit we offer, but hopefully that'll give you a sense of how we take care of our own.

The Nike Job Description...wow.

"Your job? To make sure we know our consumers better than we know ourselves." Really? I would think really knowing yourself first and being happy with who you are gives you better insight and direction to knowing your consumers, as you'll be able to relate to them in a way that's more authentic. I don't think I'd want to work at a company that values the integrity of a faceless consumer before their own staff.
