More Than Half of U.S. Households Now Own Digital TVs

Authored by Mark Hefflinger on January 3, 2008 - 9:50am.

Arlington, Va. - More than 50% of U.S. households now own a digital television, according to new research by the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA).

The news comes with still more than a year left before broadcasters will be required to convert all of their programming to digital signals, and will no longer broadcast analog signals.

That transition is scheduled to take place on Feb. 17, 2009.

In preparation, the CEA said that it expects nearly 32 million digital TVs to ship during 2008, with high-definition units accounting for 79% of those shipments.
