Foster City, Calif. - Sony Computer Entertainment America (SCEA) (NYSE: SNE) said on Monday that it sold 1.2 million PlayStation 3 consoles during the holidays, along with 1.4 million PSP handhelds and 1.3 million units of the PlayStation 2. The holidays timeframe was defined as Nov. 23 through Dec. 31.

"The PlayStation brand ended the year in a very strong position and clearly indicates more positive momentum going into 2008. We are particularly pleased to have sold through 1.2 million units of PS3 during the holiday selling season," said Jack Tretton, president and CEO, SCEA.

Separately, Sony Computer Entertainment said on Monday that it will add the Skype Web-based telephone service to its newer PSP handheld game devices.

Skype compatibility will be enabled through a PSP software update scheduled for late January, at which time PSP owners with Skype accounts will be able to make calls using the devices when in range of a Wi-Fi connection.
