New York
- Major label Sony BMG said on Monday that later this month it will begin
selling digital album cards, which will feature codes redeemable for full-length
albums as high-quality MP3s paired with bonus content. "The MP3 files
delivered through MusicPass play on computers, as well as on all MP3 players,
including iPods. This makes them a simple, easy to use solution that will
appeal to fans who already access their music on the Internet, as well as to
consumers who are just getting into the digital realm," said Thomas Hesse,
president of global digital business & U.S. sales for Sony BMG.
Set to
become available in 4,500 retail outlets -- including Best Buy, Target and
Fred's -- by the end of the month, the Platinum MusicPass cards will sell for
$12.99, while some $19.99 special editions will also allow consumers to
download a second album from the artist's catalog.
Sony BMG, which partnered
with marketing technology provider InComm on the digital album cards, also
plans to release them in Canada
later this month.
The initial slate of 37 Platinum MusicPass cards includes
albums from Alicia Keys, Bob Dylan, Britney Spears and Kenny Chesney.
