Washington - Traffic to video-sharing sites like Google's (NASD: GOOG) YouTube has doubled in the past year, with 48% of Internet users now saying they have watched videos on such websites, according to a new survey from the Pew Internet & American Life Project. Some 15% of respondents said they had visited a video-sharing site within the past day, compared with 8% who said the same thing a year ago.

Thirty-eight percent of users total said they visited a video-sharing site last year.

Pew attributed the dramatic growth to increased broadband penetration, and the popularity of such sites among men, younger adults and college graduates.

Nearly one-third (30%) of wired young adults visit video-sharing sites on a typical day, as do one-fifth (20%) of online men.

Daily traffic among other demographics has also surged, with the number of women who visit a video-sharing site on an average day rising to 11%, from 5% a year ago, while the 30 to 49 demographic saw an increase from 7% to 14%.

Other factors involved in the growth of video-sharing sites were the growing number of video-sharing sites, and the spike in the number of Americans who say they shoot their own videos, which has tripled to 14% since the spring of 2006.
