Richmond – Virginia lawmakers are attempting to confront the problem created by people who use text-messaging on their cell phones while driving, the Washington Post reports. The article calls the practice “Driving While Texting” (DWT). Virginia’s General Assembly has raised two bills to ban texting while operating a car, bicycle, motorcycle, moped, or electric wheelchair.
According to the Post, four other states are considering a band on DWT as well, including Virginia neighbor Maryland. Virginia passed a law last year banning teens under 18 from using a cell phone in any manner while driving, though they can only be cited when pulled over for another offense.
Washington state and New Jersey passed laws in 2007 prohibiting DWT, as did the Arizona city of Phoenix.
