San Francisco - Metaweb Technologies, the developer of an expansive online database that aims to house all the world's data, has raised $42.4 million in its second round of venture capital financing, led by Benchmark Capital and Goldman Sachs, VentureBeat reports.

San Francisco-based Metaweb is developing Freebase, a database that allows any user to add or edit content, build applications on top of, or integrate into their websites.

Content is drawn from sources including Wikipedia, MusicBrainz and the SEC archives.

Unlike Wikipedia, Freebase lists facts and statistics, instead of arranging information within encyclopedia-like articles.

The company has now raised a total of $57 million since 2006.
