Nintendo Profit Up 96%; Wii, DS Sales Forecasts Raised

Tokyo - Profit for Japanese video game maker Nintendo soared 96% during the first three quarters of its fiscal year, ended Dec. 31, propelling the company to raise its sales projections for both its Wii and DS game devices.

The company has now sold 20 million Wii consoles worldwide, including 14.29 million during its last three quarters, and now expects to sell a total of 18.5 million during its fiscal year that ends in March -- an increase of 5.7% on previous projections.

Nintendo also raised its Wii software sales forecast by 19%, to 115 million units for the year.

The company's DS handheld game has sold a total of 64.79 million units worldwide, including 24.5 million over the past three quarters.

Nintendo raised its DS sales forecast for its fiscal year by 5.4%, to 29.5 million units, as well as its DS software sales estimate, by 8.5% to 179 million units.
