Washington - Katharine Weymouth, a 41-year-old descendent of the family that founded and has since run The Washington Post, on Thursday was named the CEO of Washington Post Media, a new unit of the company that oversees both the newspaper and washingtonpost.com.

Weymouth also will serve as publisher of The Washington Post, becoming the fifth member of the Graham family to hold that title.

She has served as the Post's vice president of advertising since early 2005 after joining the newspaper in 1996 as assistant counsel.

She is a great-granddaughter of Eugene Meyer, who bought the paper in 1933, a granddaughter of Katharine and Philip Graham and a daughter of Lally Weymouth, special correspondent for Newsweek magazine.

"Katharine is ready for this," said Donald Graham, chairman and CEO of The Washington Post Co.

"She's had a rare combination of big jobs at both the newspaper and the digital company. In all those jobs, she has shown herself to be smart, decisive, modest and a great manager of people."

In addition, The Post Co. named Boisfeuillet Jones Jr. as vice chairman, also succeeding Graham as chairman of the Post newspaper. Jones has been publisher of The Washington Post since September 2000.
