Dulles, Va. - Hoping to stimulate the development of new mobile services, AOL (NYSE: TWX) said on Monday announced the creation of its new open mobile platform, which the company plans to make available to developers this summer.

The platform will give developers the requisite tools and source code to build and distribute applications across all major mobile device platforms and operating systems, including BREW, Java, Linux, RIM, Symbian and Windows Mobile.

As a result, developers will be able to create applications for a wide variety of mobile devices.

Steve Murphy, a senior vice president at AOL, said that the platform will "encourage product innovation."
