Report: New York Times to Cut 100 Newsroom Jobs

New York - The New York Times has announced to editorial employees that it will cut 100 jobs from the company's newsroom this year, the Associated Press reported on Thursday.

The move comes as a weakening economy and competition from Internet news sources continue to hurt the newspaper's ad revenue, particularly classified advertising.

The 100 job cuts equal about 8% of the company's total newsroom personnel.

The company plans to eliminate some jobs through attrition and buyouts, but layoffs are also a possibility, according to the report.

On Wednesday, the Chicago-based Tribune Co. announced to its employees that it will eliminate hundreds of jobs at the Chicago Tribune, Los Angeles Times and other publications in an effort to reduce costs.
