Akimbo Drops Set-top Strategy, Raises Funds for B2B VOD

San Mateo, Calif. - Akimbo on Wednesday announced that it will shift its focus away from its video-on-demand set-top box business, and instead offer a service that lets content providers publish Web video on their own websites.

San Mateo, Calif.-based Akimbo initially launched as a maker of set-top boxes that delivered video-on-demand programming to televisions over a broadband connection.

The company said it has received an undisclosed sum of new funding from Draper Fisher Jurvetson, Kleiner Perkins Caufield and Byers, and Zone Ventures to support its new direction.

Akimbo's service for content providers will offer multiple revenue models, including ad-supported, transactional, subscription, download-to-own, download-to-burn, pay-per-minute and gift cards.
