Cupertino, Calif. - Apple (NASD: AAPL) has announced plans to hold an event on March 6, to announce plans for releasing an anticipated software developers' tools for creating third-party applications for its iPhone and iPod Touch.

The company did not say whether it would release the software development kit (SDK) itself on March 6, or if a future release date would be announced.

To date, Apple has only released a limited number of in-house applications for the iPhone, such as its YouTube functionality, relegating third-party developers to creating only Web-based applications for the device.

In related news, Apple has announced plans to release the iPhone in Ireland, with partner mobile network O2, on March 14.
