Newark, N.J. - The New Jersey Attorney General's Office and Division of Consumer Affairs have subpoenaed JuicyCampus, a site that lets college students post anonymous gossip, as part of an investigation into whether the site violates New Jersey's Consumer Fraud Act.

The site's terms prohibit content that is abusive, obscene or invasive of another's privacy, but the N.J. AG says that JuicyCampus provides no tools for users to report or dispute postings of "uncomplimentary references to the physical characteristics, race, ethnicity and implied sexual experiences of students."

"Misrepresentation to the public by businesses violates our Consumer Fraud Act," said Attorney General Anne Milgram. "JuicyCampus.com must honor the terms and conditions that it informs the public it will adhere to."

Also subpoenaed were AdBrite and Google, two ad networks that previously worked with JuicyCampus.

The AG said she is seeking "to determine how JuicyCampus represented its operation to AdBrite, including the types of ads and advertising keywords requested."

"AdBrite terminated the account belonging to JuicyCampus about three weeks ago," Paul Levine, vice president of marketing for AdBrite, told Adotas.

"We removed them as soon as we discovered they were trying to use our service; they were only around for a few days. We regularly remove users who do not meet AdBrite's standards."
