Palo Alto, Calif. - Peerflix, the provider of an online DVD trading service, has announced that it will shut down its swapping service, while continuing to maintain its vertical online ad network for movie fans, according to an e-mail sent to users.

"While we have made considerable investments in our marketplace platform over the past four years, unfortunately the escalating costs of operating the marketplace do not make that business viable at this juncture," the company wrote in its e-mail to users.

"As we move out of the DVD marketplace business, we are focusing our energy and resources on building the Peerflix Media Network which is now the Web's fastest growing vertical movie network."

Palo Alto, Calif.-based Peerflix has received more than $8 million in funding to date, from backers including 3i, Battery Ventures and BV Capital.

PeerFlix Screwed everyone

Money, greed and stupidity killed this site... When you look at the amount of traffic it was getting before they started having money as the units of measure for swapping DVD's, it was up there... 10 to 30 million page views per million... In the last year or so 1 to 2 million... The moment it became money venture it was easy to see what would happen. Everyone would sell out and then all the movies would be gone and those with the most swapping chops would pack it up... Shocking that those who ran the company didn't see that in the cards. They killed the goose... As well, screwed the companies that put up the finances... 16 million or so in capital... I'm sure that money ending up.... Somewhere... :-)
