Los Angeles - Sony Pictures Television (NYSE: SNE) has signed a deal
with wireless carrier AT&T (NYSE: T) and mobile TV firm MediaFLO USA, a unit of
Qualcomm (NASD: QCOM), to launch the first linear mobile movie network in the U.S.,
according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Due to launch in May alongside AT&T's
mobile TV service from MediaFLO, Sony's two exclusive PIX channels on
AT&T's network will initially offer movies such as "Ghostbusters,"
"Philadelphia"
and "Stand by Me."
The films will remain available on the channels
for a month, with new titles to be added weekly; other movies in the pipes
include "Memento," "The Karate Kid" and "Resident
Evil."
"We recognize that people are on the go with their mobile
phone and coming and going," Eric Berger, VP of mobile entertainment at
Sony Pictures Television, told THR.
"This isn't for people looking to view
a movie for the first time. It's OK to miss the beginning."
No pricing
information for the service has yet been announced.
