Study: Most Analog TVs Won't Be Tossed Out in DTV Transition

Arlington, Va. - Consumers plans to sell, donate or recycle 95% of their unused analog TVs following next year's transition to digital signals, according to a new survey by the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA).

All told, Americans plan to remove fewer than 15 million of the older sets from their homes through 2010.

Nearly half of current analog TV owners said that they plan to keep their sets, using them in conjunction with a digital converter box.

"Consumers are far more likely to recycle, reuse, give away or sell analog TVs than throw them away," said Tim Herbert, the CEA's senior director of market research.

"While some have speculated that millions of TVs would enter the waste stream, this new study suggests that is not the case."
