Sunnyvale,
Calif. - Yahoo's (NASD: YHOO) Flickr photo-sharing
site on Wednesday launched an anticipated video-sharing feature for its 42
million monthly users.
The site supports up to 90 seconds of personal video
footage and 150MB maximum file sizes, and will be moderated by a combination of
automated abuse-spotting mechanisms, community review and the Flickr team.
"Video
on Flickr is an extension of what Flickr is already doing with more than 2
billion photos worldwide -- providing a place where people capture and share
life's daily moments," said Kakul Srivastava, general manager of Flickr.
Yahoo
said that a recent survey it commissioned found that more than 40% of those
ages 18-44 are capturing personal video clips with their digital cameras, but
most are not taking advantage of video-sharing sites.
Fifty-five percent said
they merely play back video clips for friends on their camera or a PC, and 20%
don't share their video clips at all.
