Report: Blockbuster Developing Movie Streaming Set-top Box

Los Angeles - Blockbuster (NYSE: BBI) is developing a set-top box that will deliver streaming films to consumers' televisions, and is expected to announce details on the plan sometime this month, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The device will likely be tied to the Movielink film download service that Blockbuster acquired last year for $6.6 million, which included rights to distribute some 6,000 movies.

It is thought to be a standalone device similar to Apple TV, rather than a Blockbuster service tied to existing set-top distribution platforms like the Xbox 360 or TiVo.

Separately, Blockbuster itself announced on Thursday that it will install Blu-ray kiosks in almost 5,000 stores in the U.S. and Canada.

The kiosks will feature a 42-inch HDTVs playing Blu-ray movies through a Sony (NYSE: SNE) PlayStation 3 console, and accompany the launch of Blu-ray movie rentals and sales in all of the stores.
