Report: Only 10% of Amazon MP3 Customers Also Used iTunes

New York - The digital music market may be bigger than previously thought, as a new report from market research firm NPD Group found that only 10% of customers at Amazon.com's (NASD: AMZN) new MP3 store had also purchased songs from Apple's (NASD: AAPL) iTunes Store. "The fact that Amazon's early growth does not appear to be at the expense of Apple iTunes is a healthy indication that the digital music customer pool can expand into new consumer groups who have not yet joined the iTunes community," NPD analyst Russ Crupnick.

"Based on US CD sales, Amazon is among the largest sellers of physical music and boasts a substantial and loyal buyer base -- many of whom may not be in the iTunes market sweet spot."

NPD also points out that iTunes is still selling ten times as many tracks as Amazon MP3.

Demographically, 64% of Amazon MP3 customers are male, compared to 44% for iTunes.

Just 3% of Amazon MP3 customers were teenagers (13-17), compared with 18% at the iTunes Store.

platfrom may impact the data results

we are integrating itunes and amazon into our site. Amazon seems to use real and windows and thus their MP3 sales data might skew to PC users...Was platform consideration part of the sales data?
