New York - Time Warner's (NYSE: TWX) AOL is laying off around 100 employees from its new Platform-A advertising unit, which was created through the blending of several acquisitions, including Adverstising.com, Tacoda, Quigo, Third Screen Media, Lightningcast and Adtech, Silicon Alley Insider reports.

A source told SAI that less than 500 were being laid off, while AOL said the number was only 100 and called the move an "alignment."

"These steps are necessary to guarantee that Platform-A's people and technologies are organized around common goals and operate as a seamless organization that is focused on our customers," the company said in a statement.

Earlier this week, Platform-A signed a deal to manage Verizon's online and mobile Web ad inventory.
