Senator Petitions FCC to Reject XM-Sirius Merger

Authored by Mark Hefflinger on April 18, 2008 - 10:16am.

Washington - Sen. Byron Dorgan (D-N.D.), a high-ranking member of the Senate Commerce Committee, on Friday wrote to the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) asking the agency to block the $5 billion merger of satellite radio firms XM (NASD: XMSR) and Sirius (NASD: SIRI), Reuters reported.

In his letter, Dorgan said the deal would harm consumers and urged the FCC not to follow the Justice Department's decision last month to approve the deal.

"This merger is contrary to the public interest. I hope that the FCC will stand up for competition in the public interest and deny this merger," Dorgan wrote in his letter to FCC chairman Kevin Martin.

Sirius XM Merger should pass and not be delayed any further.

20-Apr-08.. Question to Sen. Byron Dorgan (D-N.D.), How is this merger, of two "Pay-For" Sat.Radio services, in his view going to be, in his quote "This merger is contrary to the public interest. I hope that the FCC will stand up for competition in the public interest and deny this merger,"? When the DOJ had found to be right the opposite? Again... I pose yet another question... How much funds are being placed in your pockets by those who would rather see this merger fail for there on reasons for eliminating there competitors? Let's quit this BS and the exchange of monies to which only those Washington Bureaucrats are just supplementing there tax paid salaries. This merger will have no effect accept to those that pay for having this as a supplement to other forms of entrainment that are accessible without having to make subscription payments. Let the people deside.... Old Ga. Dawg

Dorgan lives on Mars.... film at 11:00!

How out of touch is your Congress and why is their approval rating <15%. Here's a good example of people not doing what they are elected to do, yet opining on things they know nothing about. So Senator Dorgan, you receive contributions from broadcasters yet voted for the war, have done nothing about gas prices or the under insured, and left SS untouched as it might impact your career.... yet two companies losing 1.1 Billion annual (losses for 9 years) warrants your attention. How about you let the DOJ do their job, and for once, Congress does theirs? Matt Miller Grand Rapids, MI

FCC - approve the merger

FCC: Approve the merger. If they raise prices post merger, then the consumer will decide - or is that what the NAB is afraid of?

are you sirius?

Exxon/Mobil passed and there was no thought about the consumer. Why is congress worried about a radio company? Shouldn't they worry about more important things, like steroids in baseball? Oh wait, I am a sirius subscriber that will get Major League Baseball if the deal is passed with XM! Honestly, does anyone know people who subscribe to one of these services that does not want to merger to happen? Didn't think so. Let's let Sen. Byron Dorgan pay for XM and sirius with all the damn money he collects from Clear Channel.

XM/Sirius Merger - take a subscriber vote

Here's an idea, let's take democratic vote of the subscribers, the ones who will supposedly be hurt by this merger, and see if they vote for or against it. Then, let the vote stand by either allowing or not allowing the merger. Please read my articles on the merger on Seeking Aplha.
