Irish ISP Eircom Sued by Record Labels for Aiding Piracy

Dublin - Ireland's largest Internet service provider, Eircom, has been sued by the major record labels under the Irish Recorded Music Association (IRMA) on charges of aiding copyright infringement, RTE Business reported.

In their complaint, filed last March, the labels allege that Eircom has failed to remove copyright infringing material from its systems, and are challenging the ISP's refusal to use copyright filtering technology or other measures to combat piracy.

For its part, Eircom says the labels have failed to identify any specific infringing material, and told the labels in October that it was not in a position to employ filtering software from Audible Magic on its servers.

The case is set to come before an Irish court in July.

Meanwhile, the French government has already instructed ISPs in that country to disconnect repeat file-swappers, while the U.K. is considering similar measures, and the European Commission recently narrowly voted to condemn such measures.
