Redmond, Wash. - Nintendo of America on Monday debuted its WiiWare service, which allows owners of its Wii game console to download new games over an Internet connection from a range of large and independent publishers.

The service launches with six titles, available for between 500 and 1,500 Wii Points (about $5 to $15), which can be purchased either online or at retail outlets.

The WiiWare launch lineup includes "Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: My Life as a King" (Square Enix); "Lost Winds" (Frontier Development); "Defend your Castle" (XGen Studios); "Pop" (Nnooo); "V.I.P. Casino: Blackjack" (High Voltage Software); and "TV Show King" (Gameloft).

New titles are scheduled to be added every Monday.

Both Microsoft and Sony already offer downloadable game services for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, respectively.
