Study: Problems in Emerging Markets Boost Software Piracy

Washington - Despite a decline in software piracy in many countries, overall dollar losses from piracy continued to grow in 2007 due to fast growing PC markets in some of the world's highest piracy nations, according to a new study by the Business Software Alliance (BSA).

While the use of pirated software dropped in 67 countries and rose in just eight, losses last year grew by $8 billion to nearly $48 billion.

"We are making much-needed progress in the battle against PC software piracy," said Robert Holleyman, president and CEO of the BSA.

"The battleground is now shifting, however, to emerging markets where many of our collective challenges remain."

The three highest-piracy countries were Armenia (93%), Bangladesh (92%) and Azerbaijan (92%), while the U.S. was the lowest at 20%.
