Richmond, Va. - To cope with the major downturn in the newspaper industry, Virginia-based Media General, the large media company that owns dozens of newspapers and television stations throughout the Southeast, announced on Thursday that it will have reduced its headcount by 750 positions by the beginning of the third quarter.

The company said the reductions include 750 jobs in its publishing division, 45 in its broadcast division, and 20 corporate staff positions.

However, the company said it will increase its headcount by 60 in its Interactive Media Division as it continues to focus on online sales.

Earlier this year, the company acquired DealTaker.com.

The company owns The Tampa Tribune, the Richmond Times-Dispatch, and the Winston-Salem Journal.
