New York
- SpiralFrog, the developer of a free, ad-supported peer-to-peer music download
service, on Tuesday announced its second deal with a major record label, as EMI
Music signed on to offer its catalog on the site.
Financial terms of the deal
were not disclosed.
SpiralFrog had previously signed a licensing deal with
Universal Music Group, and has secured licenses from all of the major music
publishers necessary to operate its service.
The service is locked with Microsoft's
digital rights management, meaning downloaded songs can't be transferred to an
iPod; users must also periodically log onto the company's website to maintain
access to downloaded songs and music videos.
New York-based SpiralFrog said it expects the
remaining labels to join soon.
"We will clearly have most major label
content on our Web site by the end of the year," SpiralFrog founder and
chairman Joe Mohen told the Associated Press.
*Correction: This story initially incorrectly confused SpiralFrog with Qtrax, another ad-supported service that generated some negative publicity when it jumped the gun in announcing licensing deals with the major labels before they had been signed. We apologize for the error.
