Washington - The Washington Post Company said that it has launched The Slate Group, a new online publishing entity that will oversee Slate Magazine, Slate V, TheRoot.com and The Big Money, a business site launching later this year.

Jacob Weisberg, the editor of Slate, has been named chairman and editor-in-chief of the new group, overseeing overall editorial and creative direction.

David Plotz, the publication's former deputy editor, will become the editor of Slate, which the Post purchased from Microsoft in 2005.

Publisher John Alderman will lead the group's business side, adding the title of general manager to his current responsibilities.

"In its three and half years here, Slate has shown that it can be a great business as well as a distinctive voice within the media," said Donald Graham, chairman and CEO of the Post Co.
