MediaDefender Helping Labels Seed Ad-Supported SongsAuthored by Mark Hefflinger on June 16, 2008 - 12:27pm.
Los Angeles - MediaDefender, an anti-piracy firm often hired by record labels to seed file-sharing networks with "spoof" media files, is also earning money from the labels by distributing authorized copies of legitimate songs from their artists on file-sharing networks, to the tune of $560,000 in 2007, TorrentFreak reported. The advertising-supported free downloads reportedly include tracks by Kanye West and Timbaland, with the latter sponsored by McDonald's as part of a contest to win free concert tickets and backstage passes.
