Baltimore - Sprint Nextel plans to officially launch its WiMax high-speed mobile Internet service in Baltimore this September, the company's CTO said during a conference in Amsterdam.

According to British telecom industry news site Telecoms.com, Barry West said that the service, known as Xohm, also will launch in DC and Chicago before year's end.

The service has been tested in all three markets since early this year.

"We're already looking at other markets to launch after that," said West.

The company originally had hoped to launch the service by this spring, but had difficulty securing enough backhaul capacity.

Sprint Nextel last month announced plans to combine its WiMax business with that of Kirkland, Wash.-based Clearwire.

The resulting $14.5 billion company, which will retain the name Clearwire, will focus on deploying the first nationwide mobile WiMax network, which promises wireless speeds comparable to those of broadband.
