Cupertino, Calif. - Apple (NASD: AAPL) said on Thursday that more than 5 billion songs have now been purchased and downloaded from its iTunes Store. iTunes has become the largest music retailer in the U.S., based on the amount of music sold during January and February as tallied by NPD Group's MusicWatch survey.

The service currently offers a catalog of over eight million songs, 20,000 TV episodes and 2,000 films.

Apple added that iTunes customers are now renting and purchasing over 50,000 moves every day, making iTunes the world's most popular online movie store as well.
