Espoo, Finland – Wireless giant Nokia (NYSE: NOK) announced on Monday that it has acquired Plazes, the provider of a location-based mobile social networking service.
Financial terms of the deal, which is expected to close in the third quarter, were not disclosed.
Launched in December 2005, Switzerland-based Plazes allows users to update their location through their laptop or mobile phone, plan events, and review their own and others’ activities.
"This acquisition helps Nokia to accelerate its vision of bringing people and places closer together, in line with our broader services strategy," said Niklas Savander, Nokia’s head of services and software.
"In addition to the key assets, through this acquisition Nokia will bring on a visionary team with an advanced understanding of social-activity services, as well as the technical ability to further develop this area."

This is interesting… I wonder what this is going to do for mobile social networking… with the money Nokia has behind it, great things can happen with this technology and I hope to see it explode!
