Report: 44% of All North American Internet Traffic is P2P

Waterloo, Canada - Close to half (44%) of all Internet traffic in North America is peer-to-peer file transfers, an increase of 3% from a year ago, according to a report due to be released today by Sandvine, a company that markets bandwidth monitoring technology, Ars Technica reported.

Beneath P2P, ordinary Web surfing accounted for 27.3% of all Web traffic, while streaming media constituted 14.8% and VoIP just 0.2%.

In terms of upload bandwidth, P2P accounted for a massive three-quarters of all traffic, while general Web surfing took up 9.1% of available bandwidth.
