Good Summary of Potential Video Game Monetization Methods

Authored by Jay Baage on July 4, 2008 - 7:59am.

David Perry, Chief Creative Officer of Acclaim Games, has identified 29 possible ways to monetize video games in a recent CNET-article. There is nothing revolutionary here - the list includes Advertgames, Episodic Entertainment and Micro-Transactions. But the list illustrates an important point - the games industry (and all other mediums for that sake) has to diversify its revenue stream in the face of competition, piracy and the economy. Fortunately there are, at least, 29 ways of doing that readily available for developers. Looking forward to a lively discussion about this topic at our upcoming NY Games Conference, where we have several panels dedicated to monetization strategies. In the meantime, post a comment and let us know what you think of Perry's list.

Not on the list..?

I wonder of Mr. Perry includes piracy on his own behalf to pad his wallet? I belonged to a website some time ago that was along a similar vein as the vastly successful Neopets, this was called 'Pony Island'. In my search to find it again after not playing it for a while, I stumbled across Acclaim's "Pony Stars". I actually thought it was the site I was seeking! The premise was the same.. and the artwork style obviously copied.. It made me sad, and I wonder how much more of Acclaim's property is stolen? I can't help but think of them now as the eBaum's World of gaming.

Coincidence? That's a stretch..

Pony Island "Fairy Pony"

Ponystars "Love Pony"
