Paris - The French government, which is preparing a law that would compel Internet service providers there to disconnect customers who repeatedly download music or other media on illicit file-sharing networks, has proposed a similar "three strikes" law for all of Europe, The Register reports.

French president Nicolas Sarkozy -- who this week also becomes the current rotating president of the European Union -- has suggested amendments to this end to a review of European telecommunications laws currently underway in the European Parliament.

The proposal is opposed in France by a trade group representing Internet service provider companies there, as well as by various international digital civil liberties groups, such as the Open Rights Group.
