Washington - The Washington Post (NYSE: WPO) has named Marcus Brauchli, the former managing editor of The Wall Street Journal (NYSE: NWS), as its new executive editor.

The news comes two weeks after Leonard Downie Jr. announced his retirement.

Brauchli will oversee the editorial operations of both The Washington Post newspaper and washingtonpost.com.

"Marcus brings a tremendous wealth of experience, both as a journalist and as an editor, that will help us navigate the new world of media," said Katharine Weymouth, the Post's publisher.

Brauchli became managing editor of The Wall Street Journal in April 2007, but resigned one year later, four months after News Corp acquired the paper's parent company, Dow Jones & Co.
