Google Debuts "Lively" Free Virtual World Application

Mountain View, Calif. - Google (NASD: GOOG) has introduced a new free virtual world application, "Lively," which -- much like similar services such as "Second Life" -- allows users to create and accessorize avatars and buildings within the virtual environment.

Unlike Second Life, though, Lively is not tied to a specific website. The application is currently compatible with the social network Facebook, while Google also plans to add access via MySpace.

In addition to chatting, on Lively users can also embed YouTube videos on the televisions in their virtual rooms.

The company originally tested the project with a group of Arizona State University students, and has instilled a policy allowing only those over the age of 13 to use the application.
