New York - BuzzFeed, an online news aggregation service, has raised $3.5 million in its first round of venture capital financing, PEHub.com reported. Investors included Softbank and Hearst Interactive Media.

Founded in October 2006, New York-based BuzzFeed's aggregation service centers on viral Web content, such as "an outrageous video that's about to go viral, an obscure subculture breaking into the mainstream, a juicy bit of gossip that everyone at the office will be talking about tomorrow, or an ordinary guy having his glorious 15-minutes of fame."

The site, which now claims 1 million unique monthly visitors, lists categories that range from style, celebrity and food to science, politics and business.
