Arlington, Va. - Despite a slowdown in the U.S. economy, worldwide revenue for consumer electronics will grow nearly 10% percent this year, hitting the $700 billion mark by 2009, according to new data from the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA) and the GfK Group.

Led by consumers in countries such as Brazil, Russia, India and China, sales of electronics are expected to rise $42 billion next year over 2008 levels.

In fact, by 2009, China will account for nearly 15% of global consumer electronics revenue, trailing only North America (22%) and Western Europe (16%).

Topping the list of most purchased items will be GPS units, laptop computers and mobile phones.
