New York - Chinese online video site 56.com, which has been down for the past five weeks for what a note on the site said was "system maintenance," but which many believed to because of government action, is now back online and serving video, Silicon Alley Insider reports.

It's unclear whether the site has been granted an official license to offer online videos from the government; along with 56.com, top Chinese video sites Youku and Tudou were not mentioned in a group of over 200 sites that were granted government licenses.

Since that initial announcement, only Youku has said it was granted a license.

56.com has received some $30 million in financing, from investors including a number of American media firms, such as Disney's Steamboat Ventures and Adobe Systems, as well as from Sequoia China and Sesquehanna International Group.
