Menlo Park, Calif. - Cuil, a new search engine developed by a team led by an engineer whose last search company was purchased by Google, on Monday launched a beta version of its search site.

The Menlo Park, Calif.-based company has so far raised $33 million across two financing rounds, from investors including Greylock, Madrone Capital Partners and Tugboat Ventures.

Cuil was co-founded by Anna Patterson, whose last search venture, Recall, was acquired by Google in 2004.

The team also includes her husband Tom Costello, who previously worked at IBM, and fellow former Google employees Russell Power and Louis Monier.

The Cuil (pronounced "cool") search engine, which currently indexes 120 billion search pages -- compared with Google's over 1 billion -- aims to provide more efficient search results, and displays them in a more visual, horizontally-aligned layout.

In addition, the company has said it will not store any IP addresses or other information on its users' searches on its servers.
