Nintendo Q1 Profit Up 50% to Nearly $1 Billion

Tokyo - Japanese video game developer Nintendo has announced that sales for its recent quarter were up 34% from a year ago, to $993 million, while net sales were up 24%, to $3.91 billion.

The company said it sold 5.17 million Wii consoles during the quarter, up 50% on the previous year, and 6.94 million DS handhelds, down slightly from the same period last year.

Nintendo has now to date sold almost 30 million Wii consoles and 77.5 million DS handhelds worldwide.

Game software sales for the Wii totaled over 40 million units during the quarter, ended June 30, and the top-selling titles for the company were its "Mario Kart Wii" (6.42 million units) and "Wii Fit" (3.42 million units).

The company still expects to see a 26.3% increase in net profits for its full fiscal year, and an 8.8% rise in profits.
