Seattle, WA. - Amazon.com (NASD: AMZN) announced on Friday that, subject to closing conditions, it has reached an agreement to acquire AbeBooks, the Canadian online marketplace for books. The terms of the deal were not disclosed.
AbeBooks has over 110 million primarily used, rare and out-of-print books listed for sale by 13,500 independent booksellers from around the world. It will continue to function as a stand-alone operation based in Victoria, British Columbia. AbeBooks will maintain all of its websites, including its Canadian website with Canada-specific content, such as reviews of Canadian-authored books and interviews of Canadian writers. According to TechCrunch, AbeBooks also owns 40 percent of LibraryThing, which is a social app for keeping track of your books and finding other like-minded book lovers. Amazon is already an investor in a similar service called Shelfari.
