DVD Rentals Are Up, Retailers Credit Bad Economy

New York - Dark economic times seem to be turning consumers to DVD rentals instead of more costly forms of entertainment. DVD rental revenue rose for the first time in years from 0.5% nationally in the first half of the year, to $3.97 billion, according to Rentrak. Video Business reports that Brad Hackley, VP of business development at Rentrak, said economic pressures are especially aiding DVD kiosks, such as Redbox’s $1-a-night offering.

In addition to the economy, retailers believe studio programs that put more titles on shelves, the growth of kiosks offering $1 per night movies and the growing Blu-ray Disc format all play a role, as well as a general awareness of the shift to digital distribution.

“For sure, the kiosk channel is gaining mass acceptance among consumers,” Hackley said to Video Business. “DVD rental transactions from the kiosk footprint have helped offset transactions [lost] by chains’ shuttered bricks-and-mortar locations. Kiosks provide a convenient way for consumers to interact and control their own rental price point. This is especially appealing in a slow economy.”
