Los Angeles - Two venture-funded social media sites, the social news-ranking site Thoof and social music site Social.fm (formerly Mercora) have been shut down, TechCrunch and GigaOM reported, respectively.

Launched last July by Freenet and Revver co-founder Ian Clarke, Thoof received over $1 million in funding from backers including Austin Ventures and Ron Conway.

The site is now redirecting to rival news ranking site Reddit.

Social.fm was founded in 2005 as Mercora, and has raised over $5 million from investors including Norwest Venture Partners.

The service initially focused on allowing users to create their own streaming radio stations, and later launched more social music discovery features, but struggled to gain traction against rival services like Pandora, Last.fm and iLike.
